COLOURFUL KHANZ - ANNUAL SPORTS DAY 2009

The annual sports day was held on the 25th of April, on Saturday. I was given the responsibility of capturing the shots for the day. As usual, my students KK, JS and Ryan aka New Kid on the Block were helping me. Sher Ren, an ex-student and ex-photographer of Hamid Khan was also there to snap some memorable shots.

I have never been to a school as colourful as SMK Hamid Khan. Of course, I'm not trying to be a racist here, but only in Hamid Khan we can see students from different backgrounds and cultures are becoming ONE! The sports day itself was colourful with Blue, Green, Yellow and Red houses competing against each other. There were also the uniform bodies of Scouts (blue), PBSM (white), Prefects Board (white and blue) and KRS (green).

I'm sure, those who attended SMK Hamid Khan are always proud of their school. And I am proud to teach the students!

Here are some interesting shots during that day. More photos can be viewed here.

I'M BACK!

Oh, yes...I'm back after a long hiatus. Still haven't finished posting Sabah's photos. In fact there's a lot of other photos that I haven't posted. Not that I want to show off my photography skills...

Just thought of sharing the photos of some events that I attended, places that I've been to and people that I've met. The panoramic view of people, objects, and places. I have lots of them and maybe my postings have to be backdated to 2007, when I first bought my Nikon DSLR.

So, people...enjoy!

SABAH...here I come!

DAY 1

A vacation... at last! The moment I have been waiting for, since 2001. This is my 2nd trip to Sabah, the 1st one was in 2003, following the MSSM Penang Gymnastics team.

I arrived in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah on the 1st Dec, touchdown at 12.45pm from Penang. I will be staying over at an old friend's place, Yuz. She just got transferred from IPIK, KL in January this year and now lecturing at Institut Perguruan Gaya.

Yuz is renting a spacious semi-furnished apartment in Likas, and staying with her 8 year-old son, Aqif. Even though it's a holiday for all teacher trainees in Malaysia, Yuz still lectures KDC and KPLI students, but the schedule is not that tight.

At 5pm that day, Yuz brought his son to a clinic for circumcision. According to her, Aqif (her son) insisted to be circumcised, even though it's still very early for an 8 year-old.

Over and done with!

The 'clamp' technique

Unlike the traditional way, now boys can be circumcised in clinics using a new technique which is less painful. I was with Yuz in the surgery room, and having every chance to take photos of the whole process. But to respect my friend's privacy, I decided not to do it. This is the new way of circumcising, which is being practiced everywhere in Malaysia. How it is being done, go figure! The role of 'Tok Mudim' is not important anymore. To Aqif, welcome to manhood!

DAY 2

During my 2nd day, when Yuz was lecturing, I used her car and drove around Kota Kinabalu. Certain parts of KK are quite congested, especially the road along the waterfront to Filipina Market and Pasar Besar. But there are alternative roads to avoid the jam if you want to go to town. One thing noticable about bandar Kota Kinabalu is ... there are lots and lots of roundabouts. There is even as small as a 'tong dram'. Hahahaha!

The entrance and the surroundings of the museum

The first place I visited was Sabah Museum. I'm rating the museum as 2 star. I can get more info about Sabah from the internet than the one displayed in the museum. The museum authority could have done better. It's very 'lame', to borrow my students' favourite word.

Of course I can't show you the photos of the things displayed in the museum. Cameras are NOT ALLOWED!

DAY 3

We went to Karambunai, where the famous Nexus Karambunai Resort is located. If you Google the images of this resort, you can see the view from above and it's really HEAVEN!

The photos that I took are only the beach, the chalets, and the surroundings. Sorry, guys... the photos in the internet should be better than mine.

DAY 4 & 5

Our ex-collegemate from KL, Ina came down to KK. She was supposed to follow me for this Sabah trip but since my vacation is "too long", she could not make it. She has a husband and kids to look after. She came down to KK today following her hubby, who has some work to do in Labuan and KK. Yuz, Ina and I spent the day shopping for some Swarovski crystals jewellery.

Some tips about crystal jewellery in Sabah. Jamilah Jewellery in Sinsuran, and a few other shops around KK sells original Austrian Swarovski crystals, and pearls too. The price is affordable, we'll get 50% discount from the original price. I'm not much of a jewellery user, but did buy something for my sis in-law, and a few close friends. There are other places selling the same type, and designs of jewellery (bracelets, necklace, brooch, etc), such as Kg. Air and Filipino Market, and not much difference in the price. But in Jamilah Jewellery, the confidence is more.

DAY 6, 7, 8

We started our journey very early in the morning. Yes, we are going to Kundasang, the foot of mount Kinabalu. Yuz made plans and booked the accomodation there for 2 nights. I went to Kundasang before, in 2003, following the MSSM Gymnastics Team. But of course, this time, I'm going to every nook and corner of the place because I have all the time in the world.

We were going uphill, and the sceneries are really awesome! Mount Kinabalu can be seen from far, and it was covered with clouds. But it is still beautiful.

Our first stop is Poring Hot Springs, which is situated in Ranau. We decided to go to Poring first because Aqif wants to have a swim at the hot springs. Both of us just watched Aqif and did not join him because of the crowd. It was drizzling after that, and at 3 pm we have to pack and continue our journey to Kundasang town, where we will be staying.

We checked in Perkasa Hotel which is on top of a hill in Kundasang. And we are so lucky to get a room facing the mountain. Once inside the room, I immediately unpacked my camera and tripod and OMG....Mount Kinabalu is just right there! Can be seen so clearly from the window. I can't stop snapping the photos of it. I just could not stop. I don't want to miss anything. Thank God for my new lense....I can even see every lines and curves of the mountain. Spectacular! Wonderful! Awesome!

DAY 7

Gaya Street Market or Tamu Gaya is being held every Sunday at Gaya Street, in Kota Kinabalu. We can find everything under the sun; just name it... food, bags, clothes, handicrafts, pets, etc.

Gaya Street Market

A 'persion' cat and a Shih-Tzu puppy costs RM1500 each!

To be continued ...

WHY PHOTOGRAPHY?

As an educator, I always use photographs before, during and after lessons. And I always encourage my students to get involved in photography. For me, it is a way to instill the love of nature among the younger generations.

The photos that I will be posting in this blog are meant for sharing. I just want to share some beautiful pictures of God's great creations. I'm not trying to show off my skill or my camera. As I mentioned before, I am still learning. I know there are a lot of people out there, who are much better than I am. I welcome any comments. I hope that I can learn a lot from the comments.

I will start off my photo blog with some photos from my trip to Sabah from 1st Dec to 14 Dec. Enjoy!

A PICTURE PAINTS A THOUSAND WORDS...

A picture will be far more descriptive of something than words can ever be, or, to put it another way, no matter how hard you try, you can't beat a visual presentation.

For me, photography is partly a means of expressing ideas and emotions that go beyond words, partly a search for beauty and a way of looking beneath the surface of that beauty, and partly simple creativity.

Photography has always been my passion. I bought my first camera, a slim compact digital SONY T100 in 2006. I was not quite satisfied with the photos so I decided to sell it off. In August 2007, I bought my first DSLR, a NIKON D40. So, hello NIKON. Welcome to my life. And I have no regrets until today!

The photo above was taken at 6.45am, from the window of The Heritage Hotel and Spa, Kundasang, Sabah. I consider myself a novice in photography. I am still learning. When people praised me for the photos that I took, I said, "It's the camera. It's not me!"
